Cam Crawford is well known and regarded in Horry County as a longtime local resident of the area, a graduate of Coastal Carolina University CCU, and a public servant on the Horry County Council. He has dedicated his life and work to serving these areas that he calls home through his career as a public servant and local politician in the area. He loves Horry County and hopes to see it grow and thrive for many decades to come.

If you think about it, you could say that Cam’s introduction to local politics began at a young age when he was first an aspiring college student at CCU. There he double majored in historical and political studies, which would ultimately give him a strong foundational understanding of what it means to be a public servant. Coursework in these two fields of study, politics and history, are commonly pursued by students who plan to enter the world of public service and politics at some point during their future careers. Cam was no exception to this trend.

It was not until the year 2015 that Cam Crawford Horry County Councilman was elected. This was a unique election because it was a special election. A special election occurs when a public political office becomes vacant before it is time for the general election. This can happen for a number of reasons. Special elections are interesting, because often, they are unexpected. The person who was serving in that political position often leaves their office unexpectedly. This creates the need to fill the seat quickly, and candidates often must recruit voters to vote for them more quickly than a standard general election campaigning period would otherwise allow.

In Cam’s particular case, he was elected to Council when Bob Grabowski passed away sadly. At the time of his passing, Mr. Grabowski was then serving as the active Horry Councilman with special oversight of Horry County District 6. Therefore, his unfortunate passing left the District Six council seat vacant and in need of someone who could step in and fill the role. Doing so would require someone with a background in politics and an interest in taking on the local responsibilities of public office. Cam Crawford felt that he was up to the task and decided to run for the office.

In this special election situation, Cam Crawford ran to replace Bob Grabowski with no other candidates directly opposing him. His name was the only name on the local special election ballot, and of the 250 votes that were cast, he received 240 – which of course represented the vast majority of them. There were some who believed that a challenger might try to oppose him through the well known political process of recruiting voters to write in your name on the ballot. Based on the strong voter turnout in Cam’s favor, it seems this challenger may have ultimately changed their mind, or it may have just been a political rumor intended to stir up gossip and intrigue during the critical election season.

Throughout his career on County Council, Cam has voted to support a variety of issues that matter immensely to Horry County. Among these topics, public safety is one of Cam’s strongest points of advocacy for the area. Public safety is critical to ensuring all of the residents and businesses in the county feel safe and secure in their homes and places of work. This is particularly important to an area like Myrtle Beach, where hundreds of thousands of tourists from out of town visit every year.

To Cam, public safety means ensuring that the County Council continues to provide easy access to lifesaving information and resources for everyone in the county. This also includes making sure that public safety officials are able to do their work effectively and efficiently as public servants. Without the right tools, resources, and people in place, many geographic areas in the county could be left in danger. Preventing this is a top concern of Cam Crawford, and his voting record as a Horry Councilman points to this.

In addition to public safety, Cam Crawford has also put great efforts into protecting and bolstering the local community and nature environment through a variety of projects and initiatives. Since Myrtle Beach is a coastal area, issues like flooding zones and wildlife become very important issues for the area.

One example of Cam Crawford’s work in these areas include hosting a recent seminar on “Living with Alligators”, which was a collaborative partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources SCDNR and the Horry County Police Department. The seminar was intended to educate citizens on the realities of living in an area where alligators can sometimes be common. Wildlife must certainly be protected, and one of the only ways that can happen is if Horry County residents understand these animals and local regulations about dealing with them.

With regards to flooding, Cam Crawford has worked with other members of council to ensure flood laws and zoning ordinances in the area respect the needs and wishes of homeowners, home builders, and all local businesses. With Myrtle Beach as a key coastal community in the county, flood zone issues have immense impact on protecting the property and well being of everyone in the area.

In fact, when Horry County was set to receive federal grant money for flood mitigation activities, Cam Crawford was frequently called upon to offer local media news outlets an expert opinion on how these federal grant dollars would be allocated in the community. He advocated for prudent use of these funds during county council meetings and was looked to as a strong proponent for wise use of the grants.

When he is not at work as a public servant, Cam Crawford spends time with his wife, Heather Ammons Crawford. Heather is South Carolina State Representative with governance in Horry County District 68. She frequently travels to the SC Statehouse in the state’s capital city during political sessions. Like her husband Cam, she was born in Myrtle Beach and attended Francis Marion University for her college studies. She has been active in politics for many years and her involvement within the local community includes numerous activities.
